전통의 깊이만큼이나 당당한 절도, 그리고 이웃을 향한 따뜻한 봉사 정신이 한데 어우러진 자리였다. 지역사회의 그늘진 곳을 밝히며 종횡으로 끈끈하게 연결된 봉사의 명가, 국제라이온스협회 354-B지구 평촌라이온스클럽이 창립 19주년의 뜻 깊은 이정표를 세우며 새로운 도약의 돛을 올렸다.
평촌라이온스클럽은 지난 10일 저녁 평촌 마벨리에 행사장에서 창립 19주년 기념식 및 회장 이·취임식을 성황리에 개최했다. 이날 식장에는 봉사의 발자취를 돌아보고 새 출발을 축하하기 위해 국제라이온스협회 354-B지구 윤명호 총재를 비롯해 조성현 전 총재, 조현철 7지역 부총재, 안양관악라이온스클럽 권경희 회장 등이 참석했다. 한편 평촌클럽 라이온들과 그들의 배우자인 네스들도 나란히 동행하여 단란한 모습으로 눈길을 끌었다.
특히 국경을 넘어 우정을 다져온 필리핀 다스마리나스클럽의 앤소니 유스비 회장과 국내 형제클럽인 안면도 라이온스클럽 김종범 회장 등 국·내외 라이온 가족과 신임 임원진 150여 명이 자리를 빛냈다.
한편 지난 6·3 지방선거에서 안양시 최초 ‘4선 시장’이라는 대기록을 세우며 당선된 최대호 안양시장도 말끔한 정장 깃에 코사지를 달고 참석해 회원들과 일일이 악수를 나누며 행사장 분위기를 한층 화기애애하게 달궜다.
평촌라이온스클럽 행사장을 찾은 최대호 안양시장의 축사는 행사장 분위기를 정겹게 만들었다. 최 시장은 “저 역시 클럽 회장직을 역임하며 헌신의 기쁨을 맛보았던 한 사람의 라이온이기에, 이 자리에 설 때마다 고향에 온 듯 늘 감개가 무량하고 가슴이 벅차오른다”며 활짝 웃어 보였다.

행사의 정점은 제21대 원재문 신임 회장의 취임사 순간이었다. 단상에 오른 원 신임 회장은 기백이 넘치는 어조로 평촌라이온스의 새로운 비전을 선포했다. 원 회장은 “오늘 이 자리에 서서 우리 라이온스가 지향하는 절대가치이자 신념인 ‘봉사의 정신’을 다시금 엄숙하게 되새겨본다”며 “시대가 변해도 변하지 않는 순수한 열정과 진정성을 가졌던 그 아름다운 초심으로 돌아가 우리 주변의 이웃들을 더 깊이 보듬겠다”고 힘주어 선언했다.

The event, which opened with the disciplined and smooth hosting of Secretary General Ahn Nam-chan, was well-organized and divided into three parts. In the first part of the founding ceremony, the solemn reading of the Lions Code of Ethics was followed by a lavish awards ceremony for members who had dedicated themselves over the years, drawing thunderous applause. In the second part, the handover ceremony, the confident entrance of the new officers and the handover of the club flag fully demonstrated the spirit and discipline characteristic of a service organization.
President Jung Ji-hwan, in his 20s, who had stably led the club for the past year, shared his thoughts in his farewell address with a voice filled with mixed emotions. President Jung resonated deeply with the audience, stating, “Serving as the president of our Pyeongchon Lions Club was the most brilliant and special experience of my life, and a precious time during which I learned the true value of sharing with my whole being.” He added, “I feel great pride in the fact that the sweat shed by our Lions has breathed warmth into every corner of the local community and contributed to creating a warmer community.” He continued by expressing his firm trust, stating, “With the new President Won Jae-moon, who possesses both outstanding leadership and passion, I have no doubt that our club will make a new leap forward.”
In his subsequent address, District 354-B Governor Yoon Myung-ho praised the outgoing president for his hard work while delivering weighty words of encouragement to the new president. Governor Yoon emphasized, “While the sadness and regret of stepping down after burning with passion at the forefront of the organization cannot be erased, the principle that ‘a successor must always surpass the achievements of their predecessor’ is the driving force that keeps our Lions moving forward without stopping.” He further boosted the morale of the members by urging them to “keep in their hearts the Lions motto: think bigger and act broadly, rather than being trapped by the barriers in front of us, especially during difficult times.”
The highlight of the event was the moment of the inaugural address by the 21st President, Won Jae-moon. Stepping onto the podium, newly appointed President Won proclaimed the new vision of the Pyeongchon Lions Club in a spirited tone. President Won emphasized, “Standing here today, I solemnly reflect once again on the ‘Spirit of Service,’ the absolute value and belief our Lions Club pursues,” and declared, “Returning to that beautiful original mindset of pure passion and sincerity that remains unchanged even as times change, I will embrace our neighbors around us more deeply.”
At the end of his inaugural address, as President Won Jae-moon vigorously raised his right hand and led the chant of “We Serve!”—the eternal symbol of the Lions Club—all 150 members gathered at the venue rose to their feet in unison. The resounding shouts of the members once again proved that the Pyeongchon Lions Club is the most reliable leadership organization that will sustain the local community in the future.
The third part of the event, a dinner held after the official ceremony, served as a venue for heartfelt conversation and harmony among comrades who have sweated together for a long time. Members concluded this pleasant night of unity by pledging to build an even more brilliant monument of sharing upon the foundation of 19 years of glorious tradition.
